If you live in Ontario, it’s good to have a copy of this http://www.fin.gov.on.ca/en/guides/rst/511.html on hand when using “Free Item” coupons. In Ontario, if the item is free, no tax is payable, many stores still try to charge you tax on the item, that’s only so for discount coupons, for free items there is NO TAX, it’s the law! I had a surly cashier at Sobey’s who insisted on charging tax because the coupon didn’t say tax included in face value so even though I had told her the regulation. I wrote the store manager and he said I was correct and the cashier was wrong and he gave me a $10 gift card! I now carry the government regulation (just a few pages) in my car when I use a free item coupon, especially if it’s a higher value item.

I do have a question regarding the “Scanning Code of Practice” though ~ what if there are some Stores that are NOT enforcing this practice? I know that there is a 1-800 # that is available to Report these Businesses’ that are not adhering to these practices.

this is really good Information because I always carry a copy of my “Coupon Policies” around with me & when I encountered a problem at one of my local grocery stores, I simply took out their “Coupon Policy.” Although my copy was different from their’s & I requested an up-to-date version of their “New Coupon Policy” that they were referring too – they REFUSED! now that I’ve read this ~ I’ll definitely take my concerns to the Head Office (upper Management) next time if there is still an issue or concern. Thank you!
