Same here…I bought soup from Shopper’s that expired almost a year ago…they did take it back even though I no longer had my receipt. I am not great at checking, but the kids do, and it has been an issue more so lately. Makes you wonder if the economy is stopping stores from having enough staff to check properly. In any case it’s an easy fix, just have to be more conscientious when shopping, and I like Sharon’s idea of bringing it to someone’s attention.

I have seen it so many times at the Loblaws near my house.
We always check the dates on everything before we buy it because countless times have we seen products that are weeks or months old.
I have gone in week after week and seen the same expired products sitting on the shelves.

My kids are lactose intolerant so reading labels are important. Since they are now 33 & 27 reading labels have been a way of life for me. If I find an expired food product I always bring it to someone’s attention at the store I am in.

I check expiry dates all the time, because I don’t want something that is close to expiry. Lately I have been finding a lot of products already past the date on the shelves, and in many different stores too. So I’m even more concious of checking before buying. Unfortunately, dh doesn’t remember to check 🙁 He bought some of the Kraft flavoured PB last week, and one date was August and the other is in a couple of weeks.

I had that happen to me recently at a Co-op store. I bought some shredded cheese with a good coupon. I put it in the freezer when I got home. It was only a short time before I went to use it though, and it was moldy…..YUCK!!!! I didn’t think I could take it back because I didn’t have my receipt anymore. What a waste of a good coupon, and my money.

I’ve had that experience once at RCSS (where I do all my shopping). It was a case of yogurt that I noticed after I got home had expired a month earlier. I never got around to returning it, but after I had tweeted about it, customer service contacted me and asked me to email in about the issue. I did and within a week they had sent me a $10 gift card!

I have had this happen to me OFTEN lately too. From different stores and towns. Living in the country though, I would use more in fuel to return it than I would get back. It makes me so mad. I try to check dates in store but when I’m shopping with four kids I sometimes miss stuff. I think the responsibility falls on the store manager to make sure that staff is constantly checking dates. Even a couple of dollars wasted is a lot to our family. Money that could be spent on other, fresh and actually edible groceries!

That’s actually a win-win for the store. They don’t have to have staff check dates & remove product, most people don’t check dates, and when they get it home, they more than likely just throw it as opposed to return it to the store. And if they do return it to the store, they just might make more grocery purchases, seeing as they are there. These stores know what they are doing.
