As the New Year rolls in, many of us are making New Year’s Resolutions. For many people, these resolutions can range from getting healthy and losing weight, to getting your finances under control or spending more time with family.

The new year is also a time when many of us challenge ourselves to “clean house” and get organized. The obvious things that come to mind are your closets, your “junk draw”, the garage etc. But how many of you are considering cleaning out your Facebook Like list as a Resolution?

For those of you who aren’t page admins yourself, you may not fully understand the inner workings of Facebook, so let me give you brief synopsis. When you initially Like a page, you show FB you are interested in that page so for a short time (about 1 week) you will receive all of the alerts from that page. If you do not interact on a post from that page within that 1 week time frame, Facebook assumes you are not longer as interested in that page and will reduce the frequency with which you see their posts. If you continue to not interact, you will no longer see our posts 🙁

Facebook does this to limit the stories in your personal feed, to the things that interest you most. The same problem can occur when you “Like” a large number of pages. The more pages you “Like” the less you will actually see in your feed. In a recent article, Facebook has announced that they are limiting the number of possible stories in a single person’s feed to around 1500. While this number sounds like a lot, its not, at all. If you “Like” 500 pages and have 300 Friends, you are limited to seeing 1 or 2 posts from each source. For a site like us that can post upwards of 10 – 20 times per day, that means you may not be seeing 80% or more of our posts!

Over the course of 2013, how many new pages on Facebook did you “Like”? I just checked out my own personal profile, and was SHOCKED to realize I have over 1000 pages that I Like. Of course, not all of them were from the last year but holy moly! That’s a lot of pages!

As a couponer / freebie hunter / contester, there is a good chance that you are in the high numbers too! But really, how many of those pages are you actually interested in? Or did you just Like to enter a contest or snag a freebie? Are you missing important posts from friends, family & freebie sites in place of posts you don’t even take a second look at? I bet you are, and you don’t even know it!

My challenge to you is to clean out your FB Like list. Ween it down to the pages that you ACTUALLY care about! Unlike the brands, companies, blogs that don’t make your cut. If a new offer comes up, you can always Like them again later. You know your friends at SaveaLoonie will alert you as soon as a new offer becomes available 🙂

Happy New Year and all the best to all of our SaveaLoonians for 2014! Here’s to many Coupons, Contests & Freebies to come!
