🍞 Canadians Can Now Claim Their Share of $500M Bread Price-Fixing Settlement
If you’ve bought packaged bread in Canada anytime between January 1, 2001 and December 31, 2021, you may be entitled to compensation—no proof of purchase required. A massive $500 million class-action settlement has officially opened for claims, following allegations that major grocery chains, including Loblaw Cos. Ltd. and George Weston Ltd., participated in a long-running scheme to fix the price of bread.
💰 What’s the Settlement About?
The lawsuit accused Loblaw and its parent company of colluding with other retailers to artificially inflate bread prices over two decades. In May 2025, an Ontario judge approved the settlement, calling it “excellent and fair” for Canadian consumers. The Superior Court of Quebec followed suit in July, greenlighting the agreement for Quebec residents.
Of the $500 million total, $404 million will be paid directly by Loblaw and George Weston. The remaining $96 million stems from a gift card program Loblaw launched in 2018 to make amends with customers who overpaid for bread.
📝 How to File Your Claim
Eligible Canadians can now submit a claim online:
- Residents outside Quebec: Visit CanadianBreadSettlement.ca
- Residents in Quebec: Visit QuebecBreadSettlement.ca
You must file your claim by December 12, 2025, and you don’t need to provide receipts. Products covered include bagged bread, buns, rolls, bagels, naan, English muffins, wraps, pita, and tortillas.
Even if you previously received a $25 Loblaw gift card, you may still be eligible for additional compensation—provided the amount exceeds the $5 minimum threshold.
⚖️ Why It Matters
This settlement is a major win for consumer rights in Canada. It not only provides financial relief but also sends a strong message about corporate accountability. If you’ve ever bought bread during the affected period, don’t miss your chance to claim what’s yours.
