Interesting news coming from Walmart Canada this morning.
It was announced this morning that effective February 9th 2016, Walmart will being charging customers five cents each for plastic bags. The reusable bags will also be available for a discounted rate of 25 cents each.
Walmart says the introduction of a similar fee in other countries has helped reduce their usage of plastic bags by more than half. If they can do that here too – that’s amazing!
Some of the proceeds of this new five cent per bag fee will be going toward support recycling initiatives for grocery bags (and other thin plastics). There are also plans aimed at improving in-store recycling and collection program and working with suppliers to find ways of removing plastic from packaging.
