This is an unexpected recall, but one you should probably know about!

General Mills is recalling Betty Crocker Super Moist Cake Mix – Rainbow Bit from the market due to possible E Coli contamination.

Food contaminated with E. coli O121 may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick. Symptoms can include nausea, vomiting, mild to severe abdominal cramps and watery to bloody diarrhea. In severe cases of illness, some people may have seizures or strokes, need blood transfusions and kidney dialysis or live with permanent kidney damage. In severe cases of illness, people may die.

The affected products are:

Check to see if you have the recalled products in your home – I know a lot of us stock up on cake mix when it’s on sale (and Rainbow Bit is my favourite!). Consumers should not consume the recalled products. Instead, they should be thrown out or returned to the store where they were purchased.

There have been no reported illness in Canada associated with this recall.

This recall was triggered by the company The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is conducting  a food safety investigation which may lead to the recall of other products.
